The Story of Steve Chen
Every good company has a story, but the best ones begin with a person who can see both what is, and what could be. For Jast Gift Lab, that person is Steve Chen.
Steve’s journey began far from the toy aisles and gift shelves of today. He earned his stripes in the demanding world of technology—earning a master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering from San Jose State University, a bachelor’s in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering from Feng-Chia University in Taiwan, and even pursuing doctoral work at the University of Santa Clara. His career took him into the heart of innovation, from NASA Ames Research Center, where he served as a senior software engineer, to IBM, where he led development teams.
But life, as it often does, had a surprise in store. A chance collaboration with Gibson Greetings on the “Silly Slammers” sound plush line revealed something unexpected: the joy of blending high-tech ingenuity with the softness of a toy that could make a child laugh. That spark became a calling.
In 1995, Steve returned to Asia to found Jast—a place where engineering precision meets the magic of play. What began as a modest manufacturing operation soon grew into a 100,000-square-foot facility serving clients across the globe. Steve’s vision was never about simply making products; it was about crafting moments—gifts that bridge the distance between work and home, that turn a parent’s return from a business trip into a child’s treasured memory.
His technical background means Jast’s products are built to last. His heart means they’re built to matter. Over the years, Steve has driven Jast into new territory, securing patents for inventive designs, nurturing a team that lives by the credo “Together Everyone Achieves More,” and building long-term partnerships in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Australia.
Ask him today, and Steve will tell you the real measure of Jast’s success isn’t in patents granted or square footage expanded—it’s in the sparkle in a child’s eyes when they receive something made with care. That’s the quiet magic that’s guided him from NASA to now.

What Our Clients Say
At JAST Gift Lab, we believe the best measure of our work isn’t just in the gifts we create—it’s in the smiles, memories, and connections they inspire. Here’s what our partners and customers have shared about their experience with us.

After 12 days on the road, I brought my son a small gift from a client—a plush astronaut. He squeezed it, smiled ear to ear, and said, “You thought about me!” In that instant, two weeks of stress disappeared.
Mark R., Sales Director, Chicago

After a whirlwind trip—three cities in six days—a client handed me a tiny wooden music box “for home.” When I gave it to my daughter, she wound it over and over, giggling at the spinning animals. In that moment, I was reminded how a small gift can bridge the distance you feel on the road.

By day four of my trip, I was drained. On my last night, I got a soft koala “for home.” My daughter hugged it tight and hasn’t let go—it turned my return into a celebration.

Work travel means juggling professionalism while missing family. This time, I came home with a colorful animal puzzle for my preschooler. We built it in the hallway—a bridge back into his world.

A Letter from the CEO (The Gift Giver)
Hello there, dear visitor—welcome.
I’m the CEO of Jast’s U.S. branch, and perhaps think of me as the wise, slightly nostalgic neighbor who’s learned over decades that a gift’s truest value lies in the twinkle it brings to a child’s eyes and the quiet reassurance it offers to a parent’s heart.
From Fred Rogers, I learned that what children need most isn’t wrapped in flashy packages—it’s the gentle gestures that say, “You are special just as you are.” He reminded us that “if you like to make things… and you love that in front of your children, that’s going to be a far more important gift than anything you could ever give them wrapped up in a box with ribbons”. He believed in nurturing emotional intelligence, comforting imaginative play, and the power of presence—values that echo softly through every thoughtful token we help create.
From Dr. Benjamin Spock, I inherited a deep trust in the instincts of every parent. His famous words—“Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do”—are the cornerstone of caregiving wisdom, a reminder that intuition and affection matter more than perfection. Spock urged us to treat each child as an individual—with warmth, flexibility, and an open heart.
At Jast, we believe that when a colleague brings home a plush friend or a musical keepsake and places it gently in their child’s hands, that child's face lights up with connection and joy. It’s not just a gift—it’s a moment of presence, a whisper of reassurance that their parent was thinking of them.
I’ve walked the road many of you have: deals closed, airports logged, bedtime stories skipped. But if there’s any lesson I’ve learned—and continue to learn—it’s that success means very little if it isn’t shared at home, in laughter and bedtime hugs. That’s why our mission here is simple: to bridge the office and the living room with tokens of joy that foster presence, connection, and, dare I say, a little bit of wonder.
Within these pages, you’ll discover how our creations aren’t about branding—they’re reminders. Reminders that absence can be softened by a thoughtful gift, that daily life can be brightened by a familiar melody or a soft friend. Inspired by Rogers’ heart and Spock’s humanity, we make each item with care, hoping it lands gently where it matters most—your child’s heart.
Thank you for stopping by. May your day be filled with small, golden moments—and may the gifts you give bring as much light to others as they do to you.
Warmly,
Zach Selch
CEO, Jast Gift Lab U.S.A
